Normally I wouldn't do an album review (although I did do one for the Foxboro Hot Tubs), but I feel that Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown needs one. Overall I think the album is quite awesome

The incorporation of the piano (which is no longer just a background instrument) makes this album more unique than any other Green Day album. The lyrics are even more powerful than those of American Idiot because they come from an even deeper part of Billie Joe's soul.
But what is this mess about the album sounding more like Green Day's older albums? I've listened to 21st Century Breakdown over and over again since it was released and haven't heard any song that can be considered part of Green Day's old sound (althought Mass Hysteria and The Static Age come in at a close second). I will admit that I do hear hints of the old sound, but it comes more from Shenanigans and Warning (albums that were NOT popular by any standard). To be honest the album sounds more like American Idiot mixed in with classic rock than anything else (and by "more" I mean "WAY MORE"). So if someone tells you that Green Day's new album sounds like their old songs, don't believe them. If you are looking for old Green Day, you won't be satisfied with this album (remember, GD is going for a more progressive sound, not regressive). For me, 21st Century Breakdown is nothing short of awesome, and I would recommend this album to anyone
